  • 19. 03. 2010. Rijeka's Championship in quotes and numbers

    Yesterday, March 18th the 11th European Individual Men and Women's Chess Championship ended in Rijeka. As you already know, the gold was won by the 20-year old Russian Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi and by Sweidsh Pia Cramling.

    The Championship achieved various records, and here are some of the numbers. Total of 566 chess players from 41 European countries participated in Rijeka. 440 players with a chess title, 196 of them Grandmasters, as well as 158 players female chess players, 134 of them with a chess title.

Players who have qualified for the World Cup and World Championship 23 players qualified for the World Cup: Nepomniachtchi, Jobava, Timofeev, Efimenko, Lysy, Almasi, Tomashevski, Rodshtein, Salgado Lopez, Pashikian, Mamedov, Movsesian, Drozdovskij, Babula, Vorobiov, Akopian, Berkes, Potkin, Halkias, Nisipeanu, Alekseev, Grachev and Socko.
  • 18. 03. 2010. Boris Kutin: „The best Championship ever“ Today a medal ceremony for the 11th European Individual Men and Women's Chess Championship was held in Rijeka. The most successful players were awarded by the President of the European Chess Union Boris Kutin, the President of the Croatian Chess Federation Stjepan Šturlan, the Prefect of the Primorsko-Goranska County Zlatko Komadina and the Deputy Mayor Željko Jovanović.
  • 17. 03. 2010. Reception for the organizers Today a reception for the organizers of the 11th European Individual Man and Women’s Chess Championship was held at the residence of the Primorsko-goranska county.
  • 17. 03. 2010. Tie-breaksFor tomorrow, March 18th, the tie-breaks for the medals and the placement at the World Cup are scheduled. The two qualifying rounds will start at 10am and 1pm, while the final matches will start at 4.30pm.
  • 17. 03. 2010. The European Champions: Pia Cramling and Ian Nepomniachtchi Ian Nepomniachtchi from Russia and Pia Cramling from Sweden are the new European Chess Champions. In the last, 11th round, the 20-year old Russian Grandmaster defeated Vladimir Akopjan from Armenia to complete his excellent score of 7 wins and 4 draws, earning 9 points and over 25 rating points.
  • 16. 03. 2010. 10th round Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi is still the leading player with 8 points after his match against Denis Khismatullin which ended with a draw. However, most participants from the top were thinking of a safe placement at the World Cup, and less about a struggle for the European medals.
  • 15. 03. 2010. 9th round 9th round of the EURO 2010 was marked by the victory of Ian Nepomniachtchi over Georgain Baadur Jobava which took Russian player at the leading position with 7.5 points. The great match between Ivan Sokolov (BIH) and Zahar Efimenko (UKR) ended with a draw.
  • 14. 03. 2010. 8th round After 8th round Georgian Baadur Jobava is the leading player of the EURO 2010 with total of 7 points. Jobava won a full point against Hungarian Zoltan Almasi, one of the tournament favourite. Ukrainan Zahar Efimenko won only half a point against Armenian Vladimir Akopian.
  • 13. 03. 2010. Rijeka hosted the extraordinary meeting of the ECU General Assembly Today in the Rijeka's Chess Home an extraordinary meeting of the ECU General Assembly was held. The meeting was chaired by Boris Kutin and attended by 45 out of 54 delegates.
  • 12. 03. 2010. The ECU General AssemblyOn Saturday, March 13th the ECU General Assembly will be held in Rijeka's Chess Home (Blaža Polića 2/2) starting at 10am. The Assembly will be chaired by the ECU President Boris Kutin, and with the presence of 45 delegates, including Russian Grandmaster Anatolij Karpov. The members will be greeted by the Deputy Mayor Željko Jovanović and the President of the Chess Club Rijeka Damir Vrhovnik.
  • 12. 03. 2010. Standings of European title winners It is interesting that in the first part of the Championship former Europan Champions are all within a half point range. Romanian Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu, Russian Jevgenij Tomashevski and Pavel Tregubov and Polish Bartolomiej Macieja have 4,5 points while Israely Emil Sutovsky and Croatian Zdenko Kožul have 4 points.

Karpov announced his candidature for the FIDE president Today a press conference was held during the visit of the Ex World Champion Anatolij Karpov at the 11th European Individual Men and Women's Chess Championship in Rijeka. The meeting was attended by Grandmaster and journalist Vlado Kovačević, the president of the Executive Committee Damir Vrhovnik and one of the best chess players of all times Anatolij Karpov. It is important to mention that this conference was transmitted live through the official Championship web site.
  • 12. 03. 2010. 7th round 7th round of the EURO 2010 in Rijeka was marked by the Russian match between Tomashevsky Evgeny and Tregubov Pavel. This was the match of the actual and ex European Champion which ended with a draw.

  • 11. 03. 2010. Ex World Champion Anatolij Karpov visiting Center Zamet

    The best tournament player of all times Anatolij Karpov, who was at the “chess” world throne for 17 years, tomorrow (March 12th) will visit the 11th Europan Individual Chess Championship which is held in the Center Zamet.

    Anatolij Karpov is an unique figure in the chess history. With his excellent games he achieved over a hundred victories at the international tournaments and matches. His score achievements definitely marked this "royal game".

  • 11. 03. 2010. 6th round 6th round of the EURO 2010 was very successful for Georgian Baadur Jobava and Zahar Efimenko from Ukraina thus they both recorded new victories over Timofeev (RUS) and Nisipeanu (ROM).
  • 10. 03. 2010. A record number of the internet visitors

    The 11th European Individual Men and Women's Chess Championship in Rijeka will overturn a record number of internet visitors of any sport event ever held in Croatia, but it will also launch a serious "threat" to the biggest European and world chess events. Namely, the number of visitors, who are watching live games through the official website, is rapidly growing day by day. During the 4th round there were more than 170 thousand visitors and as the finals of the EURO are approaching, it is realistic to expect a total of over 2 million visitors.

Together for the Mediterranean Games Today in Rijeka's Town Hall an Agreement was signed between the City of Rijeka and the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in which the City of Rijeke obliges itself to give the proposal for including the chess, within its own quota, into the list of sports making part of the Mediterranean Games sports list, while FIDE will support the Rijeka’s candidature for the Mediterranean Games in 2017 or later.
  • 10. 03. 2010. 5th round After the 5th Championship round Jobava (GEO) and Efimenko (UKR) are no longer lonely at the top. Today both of them ended with a draw, while Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (ROM) and Artyom Timofeev (RUS) won a whole point. Now, four of them are on the top with 4 and a half points.
  • 09. 03. 2010. ECU presidential candidate: Silvio Danailov (BUL) Mr. Silvio Danailov, vice-president of the Bulgarian Chess Federation will host a reception for delegates and guests of the ECU General Assembly on Saturday, 13th March at 9PM, in Opatija at the hotel Millenium (M. Tita 109).

    At the reception Mr. Danailov will announce his candidacy for the President of the European Chess Union at the upcoming elections and will present the basic guidelines of his programme.

    The participants of the 11. European Individual Men and Women's Chess Championsh have submitted a petition to the Organizing commitee and Boris Kutin (the president of European Chess Union) in which they request changing the delay tolerance from 0 to 30 minutes. They require this measurement to be valid from the 4th round and was signed by 110 participants.

  • 09. 03. 2010. 4th round Sasa Martinovic enrolled the first defeat at the fourth day of the Championship in Rijeka.
    Young International master, Martinovic was defeated by Michael Adams (ENG), one of the favourites with over 2700 FIDE rankings.
  • 08. 03. 2010. International Women's Day International Women's Day was marked at the beginning of today's 3rd round. Organizers gave a rose as a small sign of appreciation to all women players and all the ladies participating in the organization of this big sporting event. The Chief arbiter Mladen Bratošević congratulated to the ladies “their day”. Good luck ladies!
  • 07. 03. 2010. Numbers of the first two rouds

    During the first two days of EURO2010 in Rijeka, 457 matches were played, exactly 300 matches at men's section and 157 at the women's one.

    At the men's tournament, 150 matches at the first round and 50 of them at the second round ended with draws.

    At the womens's tournament, 78 matches were played at the first round (19 draws), and today, at the second round, there were 79 matches that ended with 21 draws.

  • 07. 03. 2010. 2nd round In the 2nd round many strong matches were scheduled, although in the first round 173 players have registered their wins. Franch Etienne Bacrot was saving his draw against Hannes Stefansson (ISL), as well as Sergej Movsessian (SVK) against Markus Ragger from Austria. David Navara (CZE) and Francisco Vallejo Pons (ESP) have won a full point against Vladislav Nevednichy (RUS) and Robert Ruck (HUN).
